A layout is not a container for type; it is the space where type exerts force.

Study position

Replace a type scale with a relation scale

Instead of fixing sizes first, the system defines ratios between display and body, measure and line length, whitespace and density. When the format changes, relationships survive rather than numbers being mechanically scaled.

    Contrast before size

    Ratios preserve hierarchy instead of relying on one oversized heading.

    Baseline

    Carry rhythm across columns

    A shared baseline gives varying densities one pulse.

    Space

    Encode pauses

    Whitespace uses the same scale instead of being patched page by page.
